Dryridge Roofing & Building provides ridge & hip tile repointing across Dover, Deal, Folkestone, Canterbury and the rest of East Kent. Ridge and hip tiles sit on the most exposed part of your roof. Every job starts with a free survey and a fixed written quote.
Ridge and hip tiles sit on the most exposed part of your roof. When the mortar beneath them cracks and washes out, they work loose, let water in, and can blow off in high winds. That is dangerous, and it is a common problem on homes near the coast.
We rebed and repoint ridge tiles in fresh mortar, or remove the mortar altogether and fit a mechanically fixed dry ridge system. Each tile is screwed down and sealed, with ventilation built in.
Signs you need ridge & hip tile repointing
- Cracked or missing mortar along the ridge or hips
- Ridge tiles that rock, sit unevenly or have moved
- Pieces of mortar in the gutters or on the ground
- Damp at the top of upstairs walls or in the loft near the apex
- A ridge tile missing after a windy night

Ridge & Hip Tile Repointing: frequently asked questions
What is a dry ridge system?
A dry ridge system fixes ridge tiles with screws, clips and a weatherproof roll instead of mortar. Nothing can crack or wash out, and it ventilates the roof space. Since BS 5534 was updated, all ridge tiles must be mechanically fixed, even when bedded in mortar.
Is dry ridge better than mortar?
For most modern tiled roofs, yes. It is more secure, needs less maintenance and is not affected by frost or movement. Some period or conservation properties suit traditional mortar better, and we will tell you honestly.
How long does ridge repointing last?
Good-quality repointing can last many years, but mortar does eventually weather, especially in exposed coastal spots. Dry ridge systems are designed to last much longer with very little maintenance.
Can you reuse my existing ridge tiles?
Usually, yes. We lift them carefully and clean them up. If any are cracked we source matching replacements.
