EPDM, GRP or felt: choosing the right flat roof

By the Dryridge Roofing team Updated 4 min read
The short answer

EPDM rubber is the best all-rounder for most garages and extensions: one seamless sheet, flexible and long-lasting. GRP fibreglass is ideal for roofs that are walked on, like balconies. Modern torch-on felt is a proven, cost-effective choice. The right one depends on how the roof is used, its shape and your budget.

EPDM rubber roofing

A single synthetic rubber membrane bonded to the deck. With few or no joints across the roof, there is little to fail. It handles temperature changes well and is quick to install.

GRP fibreglass roofing

Resin and glass-fibre matting laid wet and cured to a hard, seamless surface. Very robust underfoot, and a good fit for complex shapes and walkable roofs.

Torch-on felt

Not the old single-layer felt. Modern systems use multiple layers of reinforced, modified bitumen, heat-welded together. Proven, tough and economical.

Whatever the material, the deck matters most

A flat roof is only as good as what is under it. Rotten decking, poor falls and badly detailed edges cause most failures. We always check and fix these first.
