No jargon and no sales pitch. Just honest guidance to help you understand your roof and make good decisions.

9 signs your roof needs replacing (not just repairing)

You probably need a new roof if several tiles slip every winter, the underlay is torn or brittle, nails have rusted through, the roof line sags, or you are paying for repeated repairs that do not stop the leaks. One-off damage, such as a few broken tiles or a failed flashing, usually only needs a repair.

Dry ridge vs mortar: which is better for your roof?

For most modern tiled roofs, a dry ridge system is better than mortar. It is mechanically fixed, does not crack or wash out, ventilates the roof, and needs almost no maintenance. Traditional mortar still suits some period and conservation roofs, but under BS 5534 ridge tiles must now be mechanically fixed either way.

Roof leaking? What to do right now (and what not to do)

Catch the water in a bucket, move valuables, and switch off electrics on any circuit where water is near fittings. If a ceiling is bulging, carefully pierce it to drain the water into a bucket. Do not climb on the roof yourself. Take photos for your insurer, then call a roofer to make it safe.

EPDM, GRP or felt: choosing the right flat roof

EPDM rubber is the best all-rounder for most garages and extensions: one seamless sheet, flexible and long-lasting. GRP fibreglass is ideal for roofs that are walked on, like balconies. Modern torch-on felt is a proven, cost-effective choice. The right one depends on how the roof is used, its shape and your budget.

How to choose a trustworthy roofer in Kent

Choose a roofer who gives a free written, itemised quote, shows proof of insurance, explains the problem with photos, follows BS 5534, does not demand large cash payments up front, and has a real phone number and local presence. Be wary of door-knockers who “spotted a problem” on your roof.
